  • Electron Transport Chain: This series of protein complexes embedded in the thylakoid membrane transfers captured electrons through a series of redox reactions. Energy released during these transfers is used to generate ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the cell's energy currency.
  • Proton Gradient: As electrons move through the electron transport chain, protons are pumped across the thylakoid membrane, creating a chemiosmotic gradient. This gradient provides the energy for ATP synthesis through a process called chemiosmosis.
  • NADPH: Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate is another energy carrier molecule produced during the light-dependent reactions. It stores energy captured from sunlight and is used later in the Calvin cycle (light-independent reactions) to fix carbon dioxide into organic molecules.
